The Freedom of the Gospel | Galatians 3:10-14

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. - Galatians 3:10-14

- Numbers 14:1-4

Big Idea: LIVE by the LAW, DIE by the LAW.

- Romans 7:12 /// 1 Timothy 1:8-9 /// Deuteronomy 27:26

1. We want to WORK for SALVATION.

- Galatians 5:4

"The curse of God is like a flood that swallows everything that is not of faith. To avoid the curse we must hold on to the promise of the blessing in Christ." - Martin Luther

- Habakkuk 2:4

"You might conceivably be saved by both. It is 'either or' here not 'both and.' But which shall it be, works or faith? The Scripture gives the answer. The Scripture says it is faith. Therefore it is not works." - J. Gresham Machen

2. We are SAVED by FAITH and NOT by WORKS.

- Leviticus 18:5

"When Paul says, 'the law is not of faith' he sets down the main difference between the law and Gospel. The law promises life, to him that performs perfect obedience, and that for his works. The Gospel promises life, to him that does nothing in the cause of salvation, but only believes in Christ: and it promises salvation to him that believes, yet not for his faith, or for any works else, but for the merit of Christ. The law then requires the doing to salvation, and the gospel believing, and nothing else." - William Perkins

3. What we think is a BLESSING is actually a CURSE.

- 2 Corinthians 5:21 /// Deuteronomy 21:22-23

"Whatever sins I, you, all of us have committed or shall commit, they are Christ’s sins as if He had committed them Himself. Our sins have to be Christ’s sins or we shall perish forever… In the same manner was death defeated. Death is emperor of the world. He strikes down kings, princes, all men. He has an idea to destroy all life. But Christ has immortal life, and life immortal gained the victory over death. Through Chris death has lost her sting. Christ is the Death of death." - Martin Luther

4. What we think is a CURSE is actually a BLESSING.

- Isaiah 32:15 /// Isaiah 44:3 /// Joel 2:28

5. Our BLESSING is a PERSON.

Big Idea: LIVE by FAITH and DIE to the LAW.
